The Sunrise Medical Jay 3 pressure cushion is one of the most prescriptive cushions on the market. A favourite of clinicians, wheelchair technicians and end-users alike it is possible to shape this cushion perfectly to match the addressed needs. This is a cushion at the top end of the positioning scale and is designed to manage severe asymmetries.

The Jay 3 cushion is formed of a base layer of open-cell foam which is firm enough to provide the rigidity needed for the positioning control aspects and is also suitable for in the field modification post-prescription if required. The base foam layer has a pre-cut ischial well of which the depth can be modified pre-build to suit the clinical requirements. Into this goes the inserts which, like on the Jay Balance cushion, can be gel (fixed volume or adjustable volume) or air inserts (single or dual valve).

The next aspect for consideration is the depth of contouring - how large the difference between the edge and middle of the thigh portion of the cushion is. The standard is 9cm which provides good positive support but this can be increased to 10.5cm if required. With the top surface contouring decided the positioning supports can then be addressed.

The positioning options range through lateral and medial thigh supports to the rear for the lateral pelvic supports to manage rotations. For obliquity management there are different thicknesses of obliquity pads available which can be used in combination with the adjustable volume gel inserts or variable pressure air inserts.

Protecting the cushion inners is either a microclimatic breathable outer cushioned material, or an ultra-smooth incontinence cover. This completes the build of the cushion ahead of prescription, although minor adjustments can be made by carving the foam once delivered. This can typically include additional relief in the femoral and scrotal regions.
